iXsystems Announces Unification of FreeNAS and TrueNAS
The renowned open source network attached storage operating systems, FreeNAS and TrueNAS, are coming together to form a single platform – TrueNAS Open Storage.
But don’t worry, the merger doesn’t mean the end of FreeNAS. Both versions of the operating system, TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS Enterprise, will still be available. While TrueNAS Enterprise requires a license and offers advanced features, TrueNAS CORE remains free for all.
According to iXsystems, the unification will result in a faster development cycle and a more robust, enterprise-quality software due to the shared code base. As the organization moves towards the release of version 12.0, which will be the first unified version, users can expect big changes and improvements.
In a recent blog post, iXsystems shared some of the new features that will be included in TrueNAS CORE 12.0, such as support for Fusion Pools and encrypted datasets. With hundreds of improvements in store, the final product is sure to impress. Keep an eye out for the BETA release announcement for a full list of updates.
The name change for TrueNAS customers will be minimal, with only a switch to a new shark fin icon for the logo. However, this change signifies the growth of TrueNAS as a formidable competitor in the storage market.
For those eager to see what the future holds, iXsystems has announced that nightly images of TrueNAS 12.0 will be available starting March 11. And after a period of testing, the final release is expected in the third quarter of the year.
