FreeNAS and TrueNAS Packages Unify with New TrueNAS SCALE Project
In a major announcement, iXsystems revealed that they will be unifying their popular open-source storage software, FreeNAS, and the enterprise version, TrueNAS, under the name of TrueNAS. In addition to this unification, iXsystems also announced a new project called TrueNAS SCALE that promises to advance software-defined infrastructure capabilities.
Known as the world’s number-one open source storage software, FreeNAS provides reliable and powerful storage solutions. On the other hand, TrueNAS is designed for businesses of all sizes and offers additional uptime, performance, and enterprise-grade support for critical data and applications. With the unification, FreeNAS will be renamed as TrueNAS CORE while TrueNAS Enterprise will be identified as TrueNAS, inheriting all TrueNAS CORE features.
But the big news doesn’t stop there. iXsystems also unveiled their new TrueNAS SCALE project, which uses the same source code as TrueNAS 12.0 but with a few added twists. They have already made the source code available on GitHub and are actively developing it. In the next quarter, they plan to share more details about the architecture, installation links, and ways for others to get involved in the project.
The goals of TrueNAS SCALE can be summed up by the acronym SCALE: scale-out, converged, active-active, Linux containers, and easy-to-manage. This project does not affect the support and development of TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS Enterprise on FreeBSD, and in fact, will complement them both.
TrueNAS CORE 12.0 is set to release in the second half of 2020, while TrueNAS SCALE will remain a development project until its scheduled release in 2021.
